SCOPING OUT THE COMPETITION: THE BEST OF THE OTHER ONES

We don’t want this to get around too much, but we’re not the only website on the internet that features kid’s books. It’s true! (Editor – No, it’s not true, we are the only one.) There are a few other sites that tread this ground, and a lot of them do it very well indeed. (Editor – Stop lying to them.) Every once in a while we’ll take a moment to give a little tip o’ the hat to the competition, highlighting some of our favorite posts of theirs from the past week. (Editor – You know the saying, keep your friends close and your enemies closer…)

JUNE 4 – On Monday, June 1st, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (ALMA) was presented to PRAESA of South Africa by Swedish Minister for Culture and Democracy Alice Bah Kuhnke. PRAESA (Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa), is the first laureate ever from the African continent. Valued at more than $600,000 US, the ALMA is the world’s largest award for children’s literature, and is administered by the Swedish Arts Council.

JUNE 2 – Decades ago, the legendary Marvin Bileck created a series of illustrations for the only children’s text Virginia Woolf ever wrote; after a decade of work on the drawings, Woolf’s estate decided to pull the text, leaving the illustrator with a fistful of useless doodle… Or perhaps not. The also legendary Ashley Bryan stepped in and the pair collaborated, creating new poems to accompany the existing pictures, resulting in By Trolley Past Thimbledon Bridge. It’s a fascinating story.
