UNDERLOVED: FRED BLUNT ON RICHARD INGRAM & RALPH STEADMAN’S DRIVER GROPE

Driver+GropeWe asked author / illustrator Fred Blunt to tell us about a book he loves that he believes deserves a bigger audience… He chose a book so obscure, KinderLit couldn’t even track down a decent picture of the cover!

I found it when I was at University in their vast section of classic picture books.
I don’t actually remember much about the story (by Richard Ingram) but Ralph Steadman’s illustrations grabbed me and made me think differently about illustrating for children. The art is loose, playful and a bit dark in places.
You get the impression that Steadman draws for himself, without an audience in mind and that’s why it is so fantastic. He’s not constrained by what’s expected of children’s book illustration and is totally original.
One of the greatest illustrators ever, without a doubt.”

Fred Blunt is a Swindon, Wiltshire, UK-based illustrator. His first book as author-illustrator –Captain Falsebeard in “A Very Fishy Tale”– will be released by Puffin in July. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter and Facebook.
